Westfield Day School is a therapeutic school for students in grades 6 through 12. Our students are often underachieving due to emotional and psychological issues. Our teachers need to be flexible, competent in the area of expertise, and empathetic to the plights of our students. Emily Carmen possessed all of these characteristics.
Emily Carmen has been employed by our school since 2013. She was the inspiration for our performance based music program. Her enthusiastic coaching of the students was highly motivating. She also introduced theory and a number of digital music based programs to the students. A talented violinist herself, she was able to orchestrate our graduation
ceremonies.
Emily also utilized her skills as an aspiring special education teacher to work with our students in 1:1 settings. She taught Math and Reading. In one case she was able to assist a selectively mute boy achieve in pre-calculus, and helped highly dyslexic boy with his reading. She introduced movie making which motivated a school phobic boy to come to school. Her sensitivity and belief in the abilities of each student helped them grow in confidence and skills.
When we moved to a new location, Emily demonstrated a strong sense of commitment to the community as she designed and set-up our electronic music studio. She was always willing to do what she could to help out in anyway possible.
In summary, Emily Carmen was an important addition to our staff and would bring creativity and commitment to anyone who employed her.

Emily was so helpful to my daughter who was preparing to take the ISEE exam. We only had about 5 weeks to prepare since we decided to apply to private schools late in the year. Emily assessed my daughter’s needs and where she was. She taught her critical test taking skills and helped prepare her for a stressful exam. My daughter went into the test feeling confident and well prepared and achieved an excellent score. Emily was easy to work with, had a pleasant demeanor, and was flexible with scheduling and always available to answer questions. I’d highly recommend her and plan to call her for future needs.

Emily has been a great help to my son and their friend in preparing for their upcoming SAT exam. They do a group lesson at our local library and it has helped my son a great deal! Miss Emily has been a wonderful teacher for our daughter. Our daughter was struggling tremendously throughout the school year, my wife found Emily via Care.com I want to share the exceptional wok Miss Emily has done to help our daughter with her studies and her emotional well being.
Our daughter has been struggling for many years. Sadly the school has not been of much help in regards to accommodations and proper testing etc. Miss Emily has helped her to receive proper testing and was the first to discover that our daughter has a learning disability! Miss Emily has worked extensively to assist in making sure our daughter now has proper testing accommodations and day to day educational accommodations. Our daughter's grades this semester have soared! I am SO amazed at what a difference and a true professional can make in a child's life! I have had my daughter work with others but they are not at all at the level of Miss Emily's level of professionalism and genuine care.

My family has been working with Miss Carmen for the past 4 years (for both of my children.) They have gone from unmotivated and anti-homework to A+ enthusiastic students both in class and socially! Miss Carmen is fantastic and has helped our teen with their studies over the years for Regents exams, PSAT and SAT. Miss Carmen also was of great help when our child was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and provided excellent recommendations/resources to professional therapists and programs. Her teaching methods have done wonders and have turned our once insecure isolated child into a studious and outgoing student.

My teen is already so much more ahead of his friends in preparation for his SAT exam! They went from being very negative about taking time to study and understanding the material to actually making time to study and encouraging friends to also partake in study sessions. Emily is a great teacher (and yes moms/dads you're hiring a REAL teacher! And she is truly dedicated to bringing your kid the best education!) You're hiring a professional educator that happily puts your child's studies as their number one priority. She has great teaching methods that have helped my teen overcome so much of the struggle SAT prep was in the past. If only I'd found Emily sooner! (These reviews aren't kidding she is im VERY high demand!)
Emily really takes the time to get to know her students and how to best help them reach their academic potential. I am so grateful for having been referred to Emily from my child's friend. She is so genuine and will make the long stressful SAT season fly by and become a fun time of day for your kids! My kid now smiles when they study and work on fun video preparation (Emily provides great "homework" study material so your kid can continue to prepare in between their sessions--the best part? They WILL WANT TO STUDY! and look forward to Library session days with Miss Emily. P.S. she even has ONLINE SESSIONS! Parents you hit ybe jackpot with this fabulous teacher!
